There are many dangers in the world. 33,561 fatal car accidents occurred in 2012; 3,328 of these deaths were due to texting and driving.421,000 people were injured in automobile accidents due to distracted driving. Many people believe that it is safer to drive a car than fly in an air plane, ironically statistics show that cars are much more dangerous. Prior to modern day technology drivers were distracted by passengers, drinking, music, make up, talk shows, lighting cigarettes, or eating. Recently, driving has become increasingly hazardous due to cell phones. Cell phones allow drivers to surf the internet, email, fax, navigate via GPS, talk on the phone, text, and even watch television. Multitasking was explained in class as focusing on many objects at one time. You make the decision of what you are foc using on at what time and what you are ignoring. Divided attention is doing one thing while tuning out another and actively changing your train of thought to focus on the opposing activity that was being tuned out. Processing is how you process thought. Automatic processing requires little attention so one is able to do something else at the same time. Controlled processing requires attention so one is not able to do something else at the same time. Selective attention is directing attention to a limited amount of information. Dichotic listening task is listening to two streams of information at the same time, but only paying attention to one. Shadowing manipulation is listening to two streams of information at the same time, but only paying attention to one, and then repeating the stream of information that was being listened to. These two types of selective attention are possible but there can be problems with them such as hearing your name or spontaneous switching to make since o f the sentences being stated. Texting and driving is considered multitasking. While texting and driving drivers are more likely to miss traffic signals, be involved in rear-end collisions, respond slower, gaze at objects, and fail to see due to
